It's actually been quite beneficial, coming back to the project with fresh eyes has highlighted some inconsistencies in the art style. What started out as a fairly loose, sketchy style to the artwork and scenery became much more bold with crisper lines after not too long, so the outdated artwork has been updated to the crisper more deliberate style.
Other minor tweaks with the artwork, such as removing most of the lighting from various layers, and spots of colour have been added, and the game is really starting to get a sense of identity now.
Now to get to work on the dreaded save/load function... Always the bane of any programmers existence.
